Design Concept

• The Praying Mantis Floor Lamp is an American version of the classic mid-century French design by Francois Rispal. Named after La Mante Religieuse, or the Praying Mantis, this piece features beautifully arched legs with a pleated white lamp shade made from similar, but updated, materials that could be found in the 1950s. The structure is made from wood and is crafted by hand. The floor lamp can be used for ambient lighting in office or living spaces.
• Little is known about the founder of Rispal. The son of wine merchants, he was born in Paris in 1901. In 1924, he founded his company in the 11th arrondissement of the capital, at 172 rue de Charonne. Its activity ceased in 1982. The workshop and the showroom were then destroyed in order to build a real estate office. During this demolition, all plans, manufacturing documents and other tools disappeared, and with it, all the craftmanship of Rispal. However, in the early 1950s, a particularly avant-garde collection, "Formes Nouvelles", was launched. If there is one model that represents the avant-gardism of Rispal alone, it is undoubtedly the Praying Mantis.

• "Pio Manzù had the original idea for Parentiesi, explains Achille Castiglioni. He thought up a fixed vertical boom and a cylindrical box with a slot for the light, which went up and down: you stopped it with a screw. He replaced the boom with a metal cord that, when bent, creates friction and enables the lamp to be in position without requiring any screws."

Each section of the arm pivots independently, allowing you to position the 16-inch shade horizontally to cast a broad wash of light, vertically to create a focused beam, or at any nuanced angle in between.
  
• Every component is considered. The classic fluted neck adds a vertical elegance, a detail inspired by timeless architectural forms.
