About Designer

• George Carwardine (1887 â€?1947) didn’t need to invent the Anglepoise® lamp to make his name; he was already a practicing engineer of some note, specialising in vehicle suspension systems. He honed his skills at the Horstmann Car Company where he rose through the ranks to become Chief Designer. Then in 1924, when Horstmann’s got into financial difficulties Carwardine left to start his own business, which he called Cardine Accessories.
• He later went back to work with Sydney Horstmann but in 1929 the Horstmann car company went bankrupt. Carwardine seized the moment â€?here was the opportunity he’d been waiting for to explore a longstanding fascination with spring and lever based mechanisms. He established a garden workshop at his home in Bath and began work on the design that would later become his legacy.

Design Concept

• The Praying Mantis Floor Lamp is an American version of the classic mid-century French design by Francois Rispal. Named after La Mante Religieuse, or the Praying Mantis, this piece features beautifully arched legs with a pleated white lamp shade made from similar, but updated, materials that could be found in the 1950s. The structure is made from wood and is crafted by hand. The floor lamp can be used for ambient lighting in office or living spaces.
• Little is known about the founder of Rispal. The son of wine merchants, he was born in Paris in 1901. In 1924, he founded his company in the 11th arrondissement of the capital, at 172 rue de Charonne. Its activity ceased in 1982. The workshop and the showroom were then destroyed in order to build a real estate office. During this demolition, all plans, manufacturing documents and other tools disappeared, and with it, all the craftmanship of Rispal. However, in the early 1950s, a particularly avant-garde collection, "Formes Nouvelles", was launched. If there is one model that represents the avant-gardism of Rispal alone, it is undoubtedly the Praying Mantis.

About Designer

• Jonas Wagell is a Swedish architect and designer and graduate from Konstfack in Stockholm in 2007. Shortly after graduation Wagell was recognized by Wallpaper* Magazine and named “one of the world’s hottest young architectsâ€?in 2008.
  Despite an undivided passion for architecture and interiors, the studio’s work today is focused on product and furniture design with a number of best-sellers primarily within soft seating and lighting.
• Jonas Wagell has a background in graphic design and communication, which has informed a visual language with simple, but recognisable shapes and forms. The studio JWDA is based in central Stockholm and currently located in a converted car repair shop, while collaborations span from Scandinavia to Italy, United Kingdom, Asia and North America.
